Dry skin can be annoying to maintain, especially when it just comes back the next morning.  Luckily for you, I’ve experimented with many ingredients and found some of the holy grail ingredients you need to look out for when shopping for your glow in a jar.

Most of the time when I’m shopping for my Korean skincare products, I always have to rely on online stores.  It is especially tough to pick out products when you can’t try them in stores.  Depending on what degree of moisture you are looking for, here is how to decipher the keywords to determine which product is right for you.

Gel cream, aqua, hydro= lightweight gel texture

Enriched, intense, nourishing, balm, recovery= thicker cream

If you read my previous article on “what is dry skin“, one of the main issues you need to tackle is calming inflammation.  Although there are many ingredients out in the market to calm dry skin, here are the two most popular.

Cica (aka. Centella Asiatica) / Centella: rich in amino acids, beta carotene, fatty acids, boosts antioxidant, strengthens skin and increase blood circulation

I didn’t get into using Centella until 2 years ago when Cosrx introduced me to their Centella toner.  I always associated Centella with blemish control since those were a popular combo in the market for a while. I ended up falling in love with Centella after having to spritz myself 30 times with the toner and seeing my skin glow.  Granted, I think anyone’s skin would glow after dousing your face with liquids.  Nonetheless, I enjoy using a lot of Centella products nowadays and here are some of my recommendations.

① COSRX One Step Green Hero Calming Pad 70ea

THE FACE SHOP Dr.Belmeur Advanced Cica Hydro Cream Tube 60ml

Aloe: contains polysaccharides that encourages skin repair, also relieves skin irritation, adds moisture, lightly exfoliate from the salicylic acid inside aloe

Aloe isn’t my favorite ingredient since I don’t find it to be hydrating enough for where I’m living with super low humidity.  I do use it from time to time during the summer time to cool my skin down, but it isn’t a substitute for my moisturizers.  Even products with aloe as the main substitution for water, it still doesn’t do much for my skin.

① NATURE REPUBLIC Aloe Vera 92% Soothing Gel 300ml

② Aromatica 95% Organic Aloe Vera Gel 300ml

③ Isntree Aloe Soothing Gel Fresh Type 150ml

Now the next step to go from dry to glowy, you’ll have to have some of these ingredients on the ready in order to have them do your dead skin polished away.  In the early 2000’s, physical scrubs like St. Ives was all the rage but now have been canceled due to studies showing the physical pieces of the apricot seed creating micro tears on your skin.   The best and more gentle way to go about exfoliating the skin are acids.

AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) most common forms = glycol acid, lactic acid : loosens bonds on the surface of the derma to help resurface new skin cells to the surface

BHA (beta hydroxy acid) aka salicylic acid: non-abrasive exfoliate ingredient, also has calming and soothing properties

PHA (Polyhydroxy acid) the least irritating out of the three, limits how deep it penetrates the skin

② COSRX PHA Moisture Renewal Power Cream 50ml

④ COSRX Low PH BHA Overnight Mask 50ml

① SOME BY MI AHA BHA PHA 30 Days Miracle Toner 150ml

② NAKEUP FACE 10% Glycolic Acid AHA Scaling Cream 30ml

③ Isntree Clear Skin 8% AHA Essence 100ml

The most important part of curing your dry skin is adding back in the hydration you’ve lost.  Here are some of the most effective ingredients that have worked wonders on me.

Ceramide: holds skin cells together on the top layer of skin; restores moisture, fortify skin barrier and protects against foreign elements

I came across ceramides in an old subscription service from Memebox years ago.  There was a little jar of Holika Holika’s super cera cream which caught my eye, not because it had any type of fancy packaging (it really didn’t), but because the texture reminded me so much of the Dr Jart ceramide cream I had been lusting for.  Not only was it similar, I actually thought it was better and of course, more affordable.

① HOLIKA HOLIKA Good Cera Super Ceramide Cream 60ml

    ② Dr.Jart+ Ceramidin Cream 50ml

③ COSRX Balancium Comfort Ceramide Cream 80g

All three of these ceramide creams I absolutely love, but Dr Jart I never had the full size of.  Both the Holika Holika and Cosrx ones have a balmy texture and are on the thicker side which is great for me during the winter time.  Dr Jart one is a bit lighter in texture but still somewhat balmy.

Milk: contains water, fat, proteins to replenish missing moisture from dry skin

Milk is a known ingredient that is nourishing, softens and whitens the skin.  Heck, even Cleopatra bathed in it for goodness sake (lowkey jealous).  Not only is there cows milk, but there are also many other animal milk that you should look out for!

Goat milk: a natural emollient that soothes and moisturizes the skin, contains vitamin A, B6, B12, E, caprylic and caprice acid to balance skin’s pH and has a natural exfoliate

Donkey milk: powerful anti-aging and healing properties containing essential fatty acids; helps with fine lines and wrinkles, repairs damaged skin, soothes and heals skin

A lot of products I’ve tried with milk ingredients always leaves my skin supple, soft and ridiculously hydrated without being heavy.  Here are two products that I highly recommend!

    ① G9SKIN White In Milk Toner 300ml

    ② A'PIEU Milky U 35ml

Honey/ propolis: natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidant, moisturizing, soothing

Honey is my FAVOURITE product I go nuts for.  Anytime I hear there is honey or propolis in a product, its an instant add into my chart. It is SUPER hydrating, makes my skin glow and soothes my red cheeks all in one.

① BLITHE Patting Splash Mask Energy Citrus & Honey 150ml

② TRUE ISLAND Honey Bee Venom Hydrogel Eye Mask 60ea

③ iUNIK Propolis Vitamin Synergy Serum 50ml

snail secretion: stimulates the formation of collagen, repairs signs of photo aging, minifies damage from free radicals, hydrating

Yes, I know.  Cringe if you may and I was one of you guys way back when.  But I finally got over the fear of “ew, is that even sanitary?”.  Well, what if I told you snail will be your new best friend that will make you age gracefully and keep you hydrated.  You’d slap that on real quick.  I’ve learned to love snail secretion/ slime over the years and definitely appreciate the lightweight miracle liquid that keeps my dry skin at bay.

① TIAM Snail & Azulene Water Essence 180ml

② secretKey Black Snail Original Cream 50g

Birch tree sap (aka. birch water): reduces inflammation, purifies, hydrates skin, 17 amino acids, minerals, enzymes, proteins, antioxidants, vitamins

You can think Cosrx for my discovery on birch tree sap.  I was introduced to the ingredient through their oil free birch sap lotion, a super lightweight gel that I didn’t think would do anything for my dry skin.  WRONGO!  Holy cows this stuff is HYDRATING.  It is the mighty mouse, the underdog you shouldn’t get slip under your radar.

    ① Sulwhasoo Hydro-aid moisturizing Soothing Cream 50ml

② MAY COOP Raw Sauce 150ml
