EVIEW: MOONSHOT REVE DE PARIS

EYESHADOW PALETTE

Is this just another warm neutral palette on the over-crowded market?

KATHERINE SPOWART on DECEMBER 25, 2019

Moonshot is a sleek, contemporary Korean beauty brand, focused on producing high quality, on-trend makeup. I have a soft spot for Moonshot as I used to shop in their single flagship store in Seoul, before they were known internationally, and they have a couple of standout eye makeup pieces. Despite thinking it may just be yet another neutral palette, I was very excited to test it out because of my love for Moonshot eyeshadows. Here are my thoughts after several weeks of use.

Packaging

The palette is actually a lot smaller than I expected, and the pans are particularly small. It’s definitely what I’d describe as a travel or “mini” palette. It is, however, a beautiful design. The red is sophisticated and definitely reminiscent of the “French chic” ideal. The message on the inside sheet insert was a nice touch on opening.

The layout of the pans is good in the sense that the two base shades are the largest at the top, with the darker shades in smaller pans. The mirror is extremely high quality, and I used the mirror to do my entire makeup when I was out of town. The palette feels sturdy yet lightweight for traveling, which I can appreciate.

Shades

When I first saw the palette, I thought the color story was just perfect. I’m always drawn to rusty, Fall makeup, and this fits that category.  A perfect combination of base shades, crease shades, a couple of shimmers and a few deeper shades, arranged perfectly. It’s very cohesive, and these days I prefer more matte options over shimmers. The shades work well together in their quads and can all be mixed for different looks.

Application & Wear

The mattes are much higher quality than I was expecting. They apply very smoothly and blend beautifully. The light-mid shades are more pigmented in my swatches than they are when applied with a brush, but I think this makes the palette easier to work with. They can all be built up so it’s not an issue for me. The darker shades are very pigmented, and I’ve mainly been using a smaller brush with these to avoid messy application. All of the mattes have lasted extremely well throughout wear time.

My disappointment is with the shimmer shades. Instead of buttery, bold shimmers, they come off as a wash of glitter and fade significantly through the day. They don’t look at all the same on the eyes as they do in the pans. I’ve tried applying with both brush and finger and neither give the payoff I’m looking for, unfortunately.

Overall Performance

Ultimately, I really rate this Moonshot palette. While there are a lot of these shades available on the beauty market, this particular palette is much higher quality, with more variety of shades, than many other mini palettes I’ve seen or tried. I think it’s usable for all skill levels, and the shades just work so beautifully together. I am definitely disappointed with the shimmer shades, but as I predominantly use matte eyeshadows for everyday looks, it doesn’t affect my use of the palette overall. I like that I can do a super subtle daytime look or a dramatic smoky evening look, and I’ve found myself reaching for it frequently, for various different occasions.

The price of the palette on Jolse is around $23, depending on the discount. I think this is a completely acceptable price and one I would happily pay. It’s a versatile piece of makeup to own and the quality of the shadows is up there. It’s a well thought out product and I’m pleased to say that Moonshot did not disappoint!

What’s your impression of the palette? Does it look like something you’d use?
