WHAT IS OILY SKIN?

JULES C on NOVEMBER 5, 2019

Trying to find the best products for your skin can be overwhelming – accounting for ingredients, pH levels, and cost to name a few things that come into play when browsing. Taking your skincare type into account when choosing products is key as well. The most common skin types you’ll hear about are dry, normal, combination, and oily skin.

SO WHAT IS OILY SKIN?

Oily skin is what happens when the skin’s sebaceous glands produce too much sebum (oil). Oily skin can be genetic, an after effect of stripping the skin of its natural oils (over-exfoliation, a lesson a lot of us learn when diving into skincare!), or your hormones can trigger your skin to produce more oil during certain times of the month.

HOW CAN I TELL?

Think you have oily skin? You may notice some or all of the following when looking at your face:

  • Shininess – through the course of the day, you skin may look more and more shiny as sebum is produced.
  • Larger pores – looking at pores on your face, they may seem larger due to a buildup of sebum.
  • Occasional pimples or breakouts – excess sebum may build up and lead to a breakout.

If you’re still not sure, and you wear base makeup, think about how it wears throughout the day. If you notice partway through the day that your skin is shiny and it looks like your foundation seems to be breaking up, you might have oily skin.

HOW DO I DEAL WITH IT?

Thankfully, oily skin isn’t the end of the world – it isn’t even that bad once you learn how to manage it! You’ll want to make sure you refrain from stripping the skin of its natural oils when cleansing your face, so that your skin doesn’t overcompensate with excess sebum as the day goes on. This can be done by using a low-pH cleanser. You’ll know your cleanser is too harsh if you get that “squeaky clean” feeling after rinsing and patting dry.

If you want to help minimize the look of your pores and treat acne along with controlling sebum, BHA is going to be your best friend. Beta Hydroxy Acid (usually listed as salicylic acid) is clinically proven to help fight acne and help with oil control. BHA is oil-soluble, and can dissolve the sebum that is clogging your pores, which can help clear up a breakout and make your pores appear smaller. Working a BHA into your regular routine will help with sebum control over time. You can use a dedicated BHA exfoliant (think COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid), or if you want to use something more gentle to avoid the potential of over-exfoliating your skin, you can look for a toner (BENTON has their Aloe BHA Skin Toner) that can be used daily.

Picking the right key ingredients within your products can be helpful for treating oily skin as well. There are a number of products known to help, such as charcoal and green tea. You can read more about oily-skin friendly ingredients in this article. In a pinch, you can keep some oil blotting sheets with you if you feel that your skin is getting a bit too shiny!

Oily skin can be frustrating, but it can be treated with the right routine. It actually is a sort of a blessing – excess sebum can help keep the skin from aging (along with sunscreen!)
